It was about a year ago that a group of concerned community members came together to see what could be done to rescue the museum from what looked, at the time, like imminent closure. Membership and admissions rates were falling, expenses were climbing, cash reserves were eroding and there were a handful or serious issues that needed addressing with the landlord. Well we’ve come quite a way since then but we still have a fair way still to go and we can only get there as a community. So with that in mind we felt it was more than timely to sit down and reflect on the past year with the community; talk about the activity, the successes (and there have been many) as well as the challenges and needs moving forward and most particularly, how you can help. So please come join us this coming Monday, February 18th, at 10:00am at the Oakhurst Elementary School Multipurpose Room – all are welcome!
Note – here are couple of articles, one in the Sierra Star and one published just yesterday in Sierra News Online that help give some background or maybe better couched as context for the meeting. A quick programming note – there will be no Music & Movement class this Friday, Dec 7th but not too worry – Tamara will be bringing the funk back next week (her words actually)!
Hours: we are only closing for Thanksgiving day itself (ya know – to take care of all that turkey and fixin’s and stuff…). So the rest of the week we will be open our normal hours -
- 10am – 4pm, Tuesday, Wednesday, Friday and Saturday
- 1pm – 4pm Sunday
- Preschool and Homeschool Spanish are de vacaciones this week (on vacation… for the non-immersive folk) an will be returning to they regular times on Thursday and Tuesday & Thursday respectively.
- Messy Hand – Wednesday from 10:30ish to noon-ish
- Music & Movement – Tamara will be rockin’ the house at 10:30 Friday morning!
One note – that 11th Annual Christmas Tree Auction is a little less than two weeks away (Sunday, Dec 2nd) and we have a wreath still to prepare. A wreath that we really want the kids to help us decorate! So… the Central Sierra Woodcarvers have provided several Christmas/Winter themed cutouts to be painted up. These should be available throughout most of our open hours til sometime next week.
So you see – lot’s of stuff going on in addition to the normal awesomeness, so come on over, escape the whole Black Friday craziness, and spend some of the holiday week with us – we’d love to have you!Read More
Over the past several months, the staff and volunteers at the Children’s Museum of the Sierra have been over
As we continue to move forward, offering new programs and other services to the community, the truth of the matter is we can’t expect such generosity to continue without also moving to better ensure self-sufficiency. Our current pricing level actually has us operating at a deficit when the cost of doing business is factored in. As such, we’ve come to the difficult decision to enact a slight price increase.
So as of October 1st, general admission will go to $6 from the previous $4. Prearranged non-educational groups of ten or more will go to $2 per person from the prior $1. Annual memberships are similarly being adjusted; Family memberships will now be $75, Contributor level will now be $100. A full rate schedule is available on our Facebook page or at the Museum website.
We honestly didn’t feel right continuing to come to the community with fundraisers when we didn’t make this simple, small change to help close the gap. In the meantime, the museum will continue to update existing exhibits, offer exciting new ones and introduce more programs that will enhance the education of our children and the museum’s value to the community.
We truly appreciate the support of our residents, and look forward to serving you and your families for years to come.

Come join the Celebration! We mentioned in the May newletter that we’ve got some fun brewing for Saturday, June 16th: a Carnival and Open House at the museum to celebrate our 15th year! There will be many games, activites, and food and drink on tap – so come and bring the whole famliy, invite your friends and lets celebrate! The carnival is planned to run from 10:30am to 2:00pm, tickets will be on sale for food and drinks as well as for the games and many of the activities. Entrance to the museum will be free all day.
Note – we are in need of volunteers, many of them, to help with the event. Support help includes set-up and teardown, staffing games, activity booths, the barbeque and preparing goods for the bake sale table. Any that are interested and willing to help – please drop us an email.
Please help us spread the word! Since we can’t rent a bi-plane and drop flyers all over the region (nor would we want to… but the plane ride we’d definitely be up for!) we’d greatly appreciate your help in getting the word out. A copy of the flyer for printing and posting can be found here: 8 1/2 x 11and 11 x 17Read More
